About the site

The idea behind this site is to make it easier for those interested in the Wars of the Roses (or those required to study this period of history) to assimilate the knowledge in an easily digestible and engaging way

I have read many books on the subject and, whilst they are all invaluable reference sources, they can be a bit daunting for anyone who wants to acquire an understanding of the war in an onion-skin fashion.  Having said that, I certainly recommend that these books should be read by anyone who develops a deeper interest in the subject, hopefully through exploring this site, and I have provided a bibliography on the acknowledgements page.

I have, with some trepidation, launched the site whilst in its embryo stage - with just enough structure and content to show where it's going.  I hope very much that you will contribute comments and suggestions to help guide its future direction.

About me

My name is Michael Payne.  I am well into retirement and steadily approaching my twilight years.  Completion of this web site may well be my last creative achievement.

Having said that, I have had careers in which creativity formed a very minor part of my work.  I spent 25 plus years with a commission in a technical arm of the British Army and followed that with 15 or so years as a management consultant and an IT executive with the Guinness Group (now Diageo). Planning, following process and achieving objectives were the order of the day in both these careers.  Despite this, a yearning for creativity was always near the surface and I suffered a prolonged low period in my late twenties when I realised that I wanted to become an architect but personal circumstances made it impossible.

I am now satisfying my desire for creativity by building this and other web sites and also learning how to create architectural and other models using a 3D graphics application called Blender; some of my 3D models will eventually appear within the site.

I live in London with my wonderful wife and have 3 beautiful and talented adult daughters from a previous marriage and more grandchildren than I care to declare (well, 12 actually).  Other interests include classical music (especially opera), good food both at home and eating out and travel – with a particular love for Italy.  The fact that I had an Italian opera singer as a grandmother probably shaped some of these interests.
