Historians debate the start and finish dates of the war; some define it by the dates of the first and last battles (probably the view of military historians) whilst others assume a much broader span, particularly at the beginning – to include the events and social conditions that led up to the war. I have adopted an intermediate view that extends for the 50 year from 1445 to 1495.
The timeline below presents a very course-grained picture of the entire 50 years, showing only the lifespan and reigns of the monarchs concerned and the dates of the 17 battles of the war. Even from this picture it becomes obvious that military conflict occurred in short, intense bursts of activity separated by longer periods of relative calm.
There were of course many more relevant events than those shown here – too numerous to show on a single timeline. I have split the war into four timeline stages, roughly corresponding to the five stages described on the Battles page (combining two of the latter into one here).
